THE COAT OF ARMS

link
The Coat of Arms which has the city of Concepción was given by Charles V, by royal decree issued in Madrid April 5, 1552, which in pertinent part: "... and by this we worship and we want and send it now and hereafter, the said city of Concibición, or have been weapon known a shield, that having one black eagle in a gold field, and a golden sun up above the head of the Eagle, and a foot luna de plata, y a los lados, cuatro estrellas de oro, y dos ramas de azucenas de flores en campo azul, según que está señalado y figurado en un escudo tal como éste, ... "

El escudo descrito en dicha cédula estuvo en uso durante la Conquista y primeros tiempos del período colonial, pues aparecía impreso en algunos documentos de la época; pero desgraciadamente, con el earthquake - tsunami of May 24, 1751, which destroyed the city and made it necessary to transfer to its present location, disappeared on seal or

print on paper, so that from then until 1860, Concepción lacked heraldic crest.

That year The artist Francisco Silva, based on the description of weapons, produced a drawing of the shield disappeared, giving both an incorrect interpretation as well as parts in it. But, as apparently both Silva and the authorities entrusted its execution had not greater knowledge of heraldry, which is the science or art that teaches decoding and composing with accuracy the coats of arms, the coat of arms was officially approved and in use, and appears on some documents, medals and banners of those years.

In the book Design in the National Centennial: 1810-1910, made by Vicente Ossa, Abraham Serrato and Fanor Contardo, it is said that a former City Council document, dated 25 April 1739, found early twentieth century by Thomas Menchaca, on file with the Convent of the Trinity, then "the real impression of the coat of arms of the city" and is the description of its form, the parts that comprise it and their distribution field and the bordure. It adds: "The weapons were Concepción, then, in 1739, on the seal of the City Council."

But in the arms referred to this description there are two noticeable differences with the current. Let's see: it is said that the new moon being "full and not growing" and that "a part which is above the shield and the engraving is not well known, corresponds to the space that should have been the imperial crown .. .. " On these two points is where things do not match, because in the real shield the moon is growing, and it has never had crown.

We call attention that the authors of the cited work, published in 1910, rather than being limited to a description of the arms found by Menchaca, have not played graphically by a photograph or drawing, which would have been a valuable contribution to the thorough knowledge of that flag and elucidated any doubt about its authenticity. Sometimes a picture says more than words.

know if Menchaca gave its findings to the City, and if so, why the municipal authority did not declare its official use, so that the shield remained in effect made by Francisco Silva, as stated above.

Fernando Campos Harriet, in his History of Design, page 301 , plays a medal commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Club Con-ception, 1867-1917, in which a shield obverse similar to the one currently in use, what makes us think that at that time was already known in some circles, penquista the real flag.

April 24, 1920, English citizen resident in this city, Corral Bernardino, received a true copy, duly authenticated, our coat of arms, in their official colors, taken from the Archivo de Indias in Seville, copy remains in custody in the town since 1927, that the mayor then, Zeno Urrutia Manzano declared its official use, automatically expiring which was in force.

There is also a graphic document that is an irrefutable proof of the authenticity of the current flag penquista: a photo taken at the royal of Charles V, which is preserved in that Archivo de Indias in Seville, photography has 301968 date and which is duly authenticated, was obtained by Alfonso Urrejola Arrau. Mayor. (08/02/1971 to 02/05/1975) per photo. maintained in the municipality. In the middle of the text of the document is printed or drawn Conception shield is identical to the copy obtained by Corral.
